About Gin

 

Gin Saw is a blues/jazz pianist and singer songwriter and demonstrates the unique and various styles of Deep South piano. Gin Saw was born near York, North Yorkshire in 1951. Gin played in various rock & roll bands in and around York during his formative years then relocated to Sheffield, South Yorkshire where he played in various rock & soul bands with his brother, Derek (saxophone and trumpet) including Joe Cocker’s band. In the 70's he moved to London and was active throughout the decade on the London pub/rock scene, including fronting his own band, “Across The Tracks”

 

Taken under the wing of the late great father of British blues, Alexis Korner, He toured extensively with Alexis playing piano and also appeared at the Cambridge Folk Festival. During this period he also toured and backed many visiting U.S blues stars including ‘Champion’ Jack Dupree, Lowell Fulson, Homesick James and Cousin Joe, amongst others.

Recently, Gin has been playing in New Orleans and spending much time there. He has played many club gigs and festivals in the Crescent City with, among others, Eddie Bo, Allan Toussaint and Irma Thomas.

Currently Gin resides in Whitby playing solo gigs and regularly with British Blues legend, Steve Phillips and his band “The Rough Diamonds”
